The S&P 500 rose 0.41% to 1,624.20 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.45% to 15,035.78, while the Nasdaq was up 0.09% to 3,396.15.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond rose 0.79% to 1.79%.
The price of gold was off 1.20% to $1,450.50 per ounce.
Irvine medical device maker Masimo Corp. rose about 2% to $21.77, a day after announcing that its rainbow Acoustic Monitoring sensor was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use on children. The monitoring device had already been approved for use on adults. Masimo had a recent market value of $1.24 billion.
Huntington Beach-based action sports apparel maker and retailer Quiksilver Inc. continued its rise from Monday, with its stock up 2% to $7.12 for a market value of $1.18 billion. The company closed up about 3% on Monday.
