The S&P 500 rose 0.45% to 1,570.13 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.53% to 14,690.41, while the Nasdaq was up 0.54% to 3,239.65.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond rose 0.75% to 1.75%.
The price of gold was up 0.86% to $1,586.10 per ounce.
Shares of Irvine-baed disk drive maker Western Digital Corp. were up about 3% to $51.62 after HGST—part of Western Digital—announced a new drive. Western Digital had a recent market value of $12.39 billion.
Irvine-based heart valve maker Edwards Lifesciences Corp. was up about 2% to $83.34 for a market value of $9.51 billion. Medical device companies were generally mixed in midday trading Tuesday.
Anaheim drug maker Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. fell about 4% to $28.93, after closing down about 4% on Monday. Questcor had a recent market value of $1.67 billion.
Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. rose about 3% to $12.85 for a market value of $1.14 billion.
