Laguna Beach Gets Surfing Heritage Museum

To take over former Laguna Drugs store

The Surfing Heritage & Culture Center is moving from a warehouse in a San Clemente business park to downtown Laguna Beach.

The new site is located at 239 Broadway, which previously housed Laguna Drugs and is owned by the Duda family, according to the Stu News Laguna website.

“The Duda Family recognized the importance of SHACC to Laguna, to surfing and to Orange County as a whole,” Mark Christy, a museum co-chair and president of Hobie Sports, told the website. “As a result, they truly went above and beyond to facilitate this new location as part of the Duda family’s incredible legacy along this coast and we, and the public, will be forever grateful. We plan a recognition plaque in their honor.”

Dick Metz, who founded the museum in 1999 and has been cited for inspiring the famous surfing movie “Endless Summer,” wrote a Leader Board about his surfing experiences in the April 28 issue of the Business Journal.
