IRVINE
A new home for Crean Lutheran South High School is on the way at Sand Canyon Avenue and Portola Parkway. The lot has 29 acres of land. The first phase of construction has begun for the school, which currently is at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Woodbridge. Phase I will cost $44 million and is set to be complete in the fall, before the next school year. The three-phase project will cost $90 million and will take a few years to complete. The school is three years old and has about 300 students. It eventually plans to enroll 1,200 students and will include a 57,000-square-foot performing arts building, 54,000-square-foot gym and sports complex, two classroom buildings, two swimming pools, a track, tennis courts, a lighted football and soccer field, a baseball and softball field, and a three-level parking structure. The school is being funded through loans and donations. The lenders are Lenders Lutheran Church Extension Fund, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Farmers & Merchants Bank. The school is the developer of the project. LPA Inc. of Irvine is the architect, and the contractors on the project are the Newport Beach office of St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Cos., Design Space Modular Buildings Inc. of Fontana and Laubach Construction Inc. of Irvine.
NEWPORT BEACH
Phase II of the restoration of the Crystal Cove State Park Historic District has begun. The 18-month project includes the rehabilitation of seven beachfront cottages, historic infrastructure improvements and the construction of two additional public restrooms. The cottage renovations will provide two more overnight rental facilities available for public use and additional space for ongoing public education programs and park operations. There also are plans to preserve Crystal Cove’s contribution to the film industry by transforming the Beaches Cottage, made famous in the 1988 Bette Midler film “Beaches,” into a public museum. The $5.6 million project will be funded through private donations and gifts, philanthropic low-interest loans, grants and concessions revenue raised by the Crys-tal Cove Alliance. Currently, $4.7 million has been raised. The architect is Illinois-based Wiss Janney Elstner Associates Inc. and the contractor is Camco Pacific Construction Co. of Irvine.
PLACENTIA
Plans are being worked on to rebuild a gas station that burned down three years ago at Rose Drive and Yorba Linda Boulevard. The owner of the property, A&S Fuel Corp., is proposing to remove all existing fuel pumps and storage tanks and build a new service Shell gas station, which will include four fuel pumps under a canopy structure, a 2,350-square-foot convenience store and two underground fuel storage tanks. The cost and date of expected completion were not disclosed. The design features include a contemporary Spanish motif with concrete mission roof tiles. Western States Engineering Inc. in Anaheim is working as the developer and contractor of the project.
HUNTINGTON BEACH
The operator of Bella Terra mall has plans to build a 154,000-square-foot Costco store on the property that housed the former Mervyns building off the San Diego (I-405) freeway. The existing building will be demolished and replaced. It also is set to feature a gas station with eight fuel pumps. The addition of the store could create more than 200 full- and part-time jobs. Mulvanny G2 along with KTGY Group Inc. in Irvine will be the architects. The contractor is San Jose-based Wentz Group. Construction will begin late this year and is expected to be complete by early 2012. DJM Development Partners Inc., an affiliate of Bella Terra owner DJM Capital Partners LLC, is the developer. The cost of the project was not disclosed.
