A U.S. senator is scheduled to hold a hearing this week on the Orange County government’s controversial project labor agreement with organized labor.
Sen. Tim Hutchinson, R-Ark., who is chairman of the subcommittee on employment, safety and training of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, is hosting the hearing at the Irvine City Hall on Monday. Expected to appear are Rep. Gary Miller, R-Diamond Bar, builders, apprentices and other opponents of the pact.
In January, the OC government agreed to a PLA under which union workers will build most of the county’s projects in the next six years. The agreement was widely interpreted as a way to gain labor’s support for the proposed airport at El Toro. Irvine is leading a group of eight cities in opposing the airport.
