Newport Beach Eyeing $12 Million Land Buy

Property could be used for transportation center

The Newport Beach City Council approved nearly $12 million to be allocated to the purchase of land at 3848 Campus Drive. City officials plan to use the land for the potential relocation of Newport Transportation Center, which is currently located near Fashion Island at 1500 Avocado Ave.

Newport Beach would spend $11.5 million to buy the land, plus closing and relocation costs of nearly $500,000.

“With the potential of new residential units in (the Airport Area), staff has closely tracked property sales for opportunities that will support the city’s needs,” according to a Newport Beach staff report.

“Staff identified an opportunity to acquire the site at 3848 Campus Drive in the Airport Area, which can be operated in its current condition and redeveloped at a future time to address the city’s needs for transportation,” the report continued. “Providing public transportation routes through the Airport Area will be important as that part of the city is built with additional housing.”
