Costa Mesa Panel OKs Fairview Developmental Center Redo

Up to 3,800 residential units could be added

A Costa Mesa site once used to serve people with developmental and intellectual disabilities could be converted into a mixed-use project with thousands of residences, commercial buildings and open space.

The Costa Mesa Planning Commission on Aug. 25 recommended the city consider an ambitious redevelopment of the 115-acre Fairview Development Center site. City officials will begin weighing in on a plan that could bring 2,300 to 3,800 housing units to the former state property.

As much as 35,000 square feet of commercial use could also be included in the plan. Commissioners also recommended the city consider adding at least 12 acres of publicly accessible open space and pedestrian trails.

Details of the proposed redevelopment still need to be fleshed out by the Costa Mesa City Council.
