Airline Picks Up Cardiac Defibrillators

Irvine-based medical device maker Cardiac Science Inc. said Wednesday that it signed a pact to provide its Powerheart defibrillators to America West Airlines.

America West will use the machines in its Phoenix headquarters and in other corporate and maintenance facilities, including call centers in Arizona and Nevada. The company’s defibrillators deliver tiny electric shocks to people suffering heart attacks.

Cardiac, which is awaiting regulatory approval on its pending acquisition by Quinton Cardiology Corp. of Bothell, Wash., said that it would also provide automated external defibrillator program management services and training to America West employees.

Cardiac’s shares were up nearly 2% to $1.04 in trading Wednesday.
