Irvine-based Gateway Inc. said Wednesday it will expand its distribution of personal computers through retail outlets in Japan starting this month.
Gateway and its eMachines computers will be sold through 220 Gigas K’s Denki stores in Japan.
The computer maker also is expanding its relationship with Best Denki, another Japanese retailer, nearly doubling its presence to 125 stores nationwide. Gateway’s products now are sold in more than 500 stores in Japan.
Gateway’s Ed Fisher, senior vice president in charge of international sales, said market acceptance of its eMachines brand has been solid since returning to the market in December.
“Our eMachines brand is consistently one of the top retail PC sellers in Japan,” Fisher said.
Other Gateway retail partners in Japan include Ishimaru Denki Co. Ltd., Joshin Denki Co. Ltd., Nojima Corp. and Tsukumo Co. Ltd.
Gateway bought Irvine discount PC maker eMachines Inc. last year for roughly $266 million, bringing the company from San Diego to Orange County.
Shares of Gateway rose 2.6% to nearly $4 on Wednesday.
