UCI Gets $11.5M for Biological Systems Center

University of California, Irvine, has received $11.5 million from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for the school’s Center for Complex Biological Systems.

The latest funding will come over five years. The federal government’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences had provided the center with initial grants of $450,000 in 2002 and $14.5 million in 2007.

The center has drawn more than $36 million in federal and private funding for research and education since its launch in 2001.

Research at the Center for Complex Biological Systems is done by biologists, physicists, mathematicians and engineers.

The facility also hosts scientific seminars and symposia, as well as offering courses in systems biology.

It is one of 13 research centers funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
