Indices were down heavily in midday trading on oil prices falling below $30 a barrel and economic woes in China.
The S&P 500 was down 2.7% to 1,869.78. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 2.8% to 15,916.38. The Nasdaq was down 3.4% to 4,457.15.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond was down 3.3% to 2.03%.
The price of gold was up 1.5% to $1,090.

Anaheim-based Willdan Group Inc. was up about 1% to 7.77 and a $61 million market cap in a declining market. Analysts at Seaport Global, based in New York and with an office in Costa Mesa, initiated coverage on shares of the engineering services firm with a “speculative buy” rating.
