Chinese EV Battery Maker, Energy Storage Firm Opens in Irvine

Rept Battero, the battery division of China’s Tsingshan Holding Group, has opened its first U.S. office in Irvine, in the latest sign of Orange County as a center of EV and clean energy innovation.

“We have a large number of clients located in and around Irvine, and establishing a subsidiary here will allow us to maintain close communication with our clients and provide them with more comprehensive service,” North America General Manager Jason Hong told the Business Journal on Sept. 6.

He cites the robust business environment in Irvine that “will help us attract local talent to help expand our clean energy business throughout North America.”

“After years of development, Rept Battero has become more closely connected with the North American market, and the establishment of this subsidiary is an important milestone,” Hong said.

Employs 15 to Start

The Rept Battero office at 18400 Von Karman Avenue opened on Sept. 9. It has 3,000 square feet and will have up to 15 staff to start.

Rept Battero will also be exhibiting at RE+ from Sept. 10-12 in the Anaheim Convention Center. RE+ is a major conference for the clean energy industry including solar, energy storage, hydrogen, microgrids, EV charging and infrastructure, and wind energy.

Rept Battero, established in 2017, focuses on research, development, manufacturing and commercialization of advanced lithium-ion batteries for new energy vehicles and intelligent energy storage systems.

“Backed by Irvine’s talent and technological advantages in the new energy industry, we will bring our North American clients a more complete service experience through our local professional team and nationwide after-sales service network,” according to local chief Hong.

Other leaders in OC’s EV industry include vehicle maker Rivian Automotive, battery developer Enevate and charging station specialist Qmerit, all based in Irvine. Waev Inc. in Anaheim makes electric-powered light utility vehicles, including the legendary Taylor-Dunn.
