Anaheim-based Interstate Electronics Corp. has been tapped for a $31.9 million contract to develop GPS technology for the U.S. Air Force.
Interstate Electronics, a unit of New York-based L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., is the 12th-largest aerospace and defense contractor in Orange County, with 456 employees here.
The company designs and manufactures satellite-based signal-processing products for use in the military and various other government agencies, as well as in commercial markets. Its products include GPS and navigation systems, mobile video systems and on-site equipment operation and maintenance services.
Interstate Electronics’ 350,000-square-foot facility in Anaheim houses the company’s manufacturing, customer service, technical training and human resources departments, among others.
The latest contract is part of the Military GPS User Equipment program initiated by the Air Force in 2006. The program aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of military GPS receivers.
Work is expected to be completed by October 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Other ongoing military projects for Interstate Electronics include a $24 million deal to supply video-management equipment to the U.S. Marine Corps. Work for that contract, which was awarded in August, is expected to be completed next year. The agreement has options that could bring the total value of the contract to $84.9 million and boost workload to continue through August 2016.
