WHO: Henry Samueli co-founded Broadcom in 1991; longtime chairman of the board; co-owner of the National Hockey League’s Anaheim Ducks since 2005. Samuelis are helping to fund $4B OCVibe development around Honda Center in Anaheim.
WHY: After Broadcom went public in 1998, Henry and Susan created the Samueli Foundation and to date they have gifted over $1B primarily in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education, Integrative Health, Youth Services, Social Justice and Jewish Culture. Estimated to have sold more than $1.5B in shares since Broadcom went public.
IN THE NEWS: Samuelis are among Southern California’s top philanthropists, and are members of the Giving Pledge, a group that promises to give away the majority of their money during their lifetime. A few years ago, they made a $100M gift to the University of California, Los Angeles Samueli School of Engineering, described as the largest gift ever received at their namesake school. Giving to UCLA has approached $200M. Supported University of California, Irvine’s Susan & Henry College of Health Sciences with $200M gift.
NOTABLE: Samuelis said in June 2023 they were donating an additional $50 million to UCI.
IN THEIR WORDS: Henry Samueli told the Business Journal that “never in my wildest dreams” did he imagine that Broadcom, which still has a large employee base in Irvine, would have grown to its current size.
