Laguna Playhouse Director Ellen Richard Resigns

Grew theatre subscriptions by 60% pre-COVID

The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach said its Executive Producing Director, Ellen Richard, has resigned. A specific reason wasn’t given.

Richard, a longtime Broadway exec who has won six Tonys in her prior jobs, first joined as executive director in 2016, assuming her current title in 2020. During her term, she oversaw the renovation of the building and “led the playhouse to unprecedented financial success,” which included a 60% increase in theater subscriptions before the pandemic, Laguna Playhouse officials said in a statement.

“Ellen led the Playhouse through the most difficult challenge the Playhouse has faced in its 100-year history, being closed for almost two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the theater’s board of directors said in a statement. “We thank her for her service.”

The playhouse will soon announce an interim artistic director, though it did not specify a timeline.
