A supply chain logistics firm with a network spanning across 100-plus countries was recognized for its women-dominant leadership with revenue projections to surpass $100 million.
Primary Freight Services Inc., which was founded in 1998 by Kathy Hogan and her brother John Brown, continues to grow and maintain itself as a major player in the transportation and logistics industries.
Hogan was the recipient of the Business Journal’s Women in Business Award last year. The La Palma-based Primary Freight Services president was recognized for streamlining her company’s workflow with new and updated software.
What started as a company with just four employees grew into an international logistics provider with more than 70 team members working at operations in Orange County, Chicago and New York City.
Most of the company’s management team – 75% – are women. That’s nearly three times the average (26%) of C-Suite roles held by women across the transportation and logistics industry, according to data from Gartner, a consulting and research firm.
“Advancements in freight industry have made it less reliant on physical labor and more on skills where women can excel,” Hogan told the Business Journal last year.
Nearly one year since Hogan was recognized for her leadership, Primary Freight Services is proving there is more that goes into a successful supply chain company than physical labor.
Primary Freight Services, according to its chief financial officer, missed its goal of $100 million in revenue for 2023 but is 12% ahead of last year at this point of 2024 – and its peak season for the calendar year (Thanksgiving and Christmas) has yet to arrive.
Hogan’s transportation and logistics company posted revenues of $94 million in revenue in 2022 and $81 million in 2021.
Hogan graduated from Mercy University in New York with a degree in business administration in 1990. She eventually moved to California with her father and worked at a supply chain business before joining with her brother to create Primary Freight Services.
Once Primary Freight Services was launched, Hogan and her brother created a quarterly town hall meeting series, giving company employees the space to ask questions and discuss corporate and departmental goals.
More recently, Hogan implemented a real-time data monitoring platform and started using software, called the Entrepreneurial Operating System, to maximize company-wide efficiency.
Primary Freight Services staff can use the software to either anticipate customer departures or use analytics and trends to increase purchases.
