The Village, an ambitious proposal to redevelop more than 17 acres of land near South Coast Plaza into a mixed-use development with 1,583 housing units, 300,000 square feet of office and 80,000 square feet of dining and retail, was approved by the Santa Ana City Council on Sept. 16.
Council members unanimously approved The Village Santa Ana Specific Plan and Development Agreement, allowing for what the city described as an “underperforming commercial center” at 1561 W. Sunflower Ave in Santa Ana into an urban center with buildings that would range from one to 25 floors high.
The project was proposed by the Segerstrom family, whose notable holdings include South Coast Plaza and a three-building industrial campus – South Coast Technology Center – nearby.
“The Village Santa Ana represents a bold step toward transforming an underutilized commercial center into a thriving community hub where people can live, work and gather,” Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua said in a statement. “This project reflects the vision of our City Council and our General Plan to respond to the growing housing and economic needs of our city.”
The council’s approval also calls for the developer to make $9.3 million in community benefit payments and provide $7.1 million for affordable housing funding. The Village would be built in five phases over the next 20 years.
The Village is adjacent to Related Bristol, a 41-acre urban-themed development with a $2.9 billion price tag. The project is being developed by The Related Cos.
