Vons, Pavilions Raise $1.4M for Easter Seals Locally

Safeway Inc.’s Southern California Vons and Pavilions grocery stores raised $1.4 million for Santa Ana-based Easter Seals Southern California and Long Beach-based Special Olympics Southern California.

The stores collected donations that customers made at checkout in April.

The Pavilions store at 21181 Newport Coast Drive raised $5,664.01 during the campaign, the highest amount in its district.

Safeway grocers nationwide raised $7.7 million altogether for national affiliates of Easter Seals and Special Olympics.

Wooden Floor

The Wooden Floor’s 29th annual concert raised $265,000.

The Santa Ana-based organization helps develop youth through dance, education and family assistance.

About 180 people attended the event held at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Choreographers of the performance were Melanie Ríos Glaser, as well as Chris Yon and John Heginbotham.

Stadium Walk

Irvine-based Orange County United Way and Anaheim-based Angels Baseball Foundation Inc. raised $165,000 at the fourth annual Walk United at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.

More than 2,700 people attended the 5K Walk, which raises funds and awareness for the 300,000-plus Orange County residents who struggle to make ends meet.

Lake Forest-based Western Digital Corp. raised the most money, more than $20,000.

United Parcel Service Inc. recruited the most walkers, 500 in all.

Zumba instructor Stephanie Stidman warmed up the crowd before the walking began.

Leading the walk: Max Gardner, United Way chief executive; Tom Tait, Anaheim mayor; Gregg Martin, Walk United chairman and United Way board member; and Mark Merhab, chairman of the Angels Baseball Foundation.

Go Country 105.1 radio host Ginny Harman emceed the event.

Former Angels All-Star second baseman Bobby Grich autographed photos during the event.

Habitat ReStores

Irvine-based 3 Day Blinds Corp. donated window drapes, shutters and shades valued at more than $88,000 to Habitat ReStores Orange County’s Santa Ana and Garden Grove stores.

The donated window coverings were used by 3 Day Blinds in photo shoots or in product testing.

Habitat ReStores sell new and gently used remodeling and home improvement materials at its stores.

Store profits support Habitat for Humanity of Orange County.

Golf Tournament

The 17th Annual JMG Security Systems Inc.’s Benefit Golf Tournament raised $75,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley, which serves Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach.

The event was held at the Mile Square Golf Course in Fountain Valley.

Costa Mesa-based Pacific Premier Bank was the tournament’s hosting sponsor.

Soup Kitchen

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen raised $60,000 at its 26th annual gala and auction.

The donation helps feed 300 people daily, according to Shannon Santos, executive director of the soup kitchen.

The soup kitchen is open seven days a week. The site provides after school tutoring in addition to cooking and serving meals.

Area restaurants and stores donated food and drinks.

Bits and Pieces

Psi Delta Sigma Inc. donated $29,034 to United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County. That represented a 16% increase from its 2011 donation to the organization. … Evelyn Wilden Freed and Dr. Frank Holston Freed commissioned and donated an 1,800-pound bronze sculpture near the entrance of St. Joseph Hospital in Orange.
