GONZÁLEZ FAMILY

OWNERS

NORTHGATE GONZÁLEZ MARKET

WHY: 13 children of Mexican grocery chain founders own and oversee Anaheim-based business started in 1980, with brothers Don Miguel and Oscar González as co-CEOs. Generates $1B in annual sales across 44 stores. Four stores under development.

IN THE NEWS: Opening newest grocery location by winter in La Mirada, the city where founder and patriarch Don Miguel González Jiménez reunited with his wife and children after immigrating to California.

NOTABLE: Three generations involved; won Business Journal’s Longevity Award at Family-Owned Business Awards in 2024. Opened a new marketplace concept dubbed Mercado González in Costa Mesa in late 2023, arguably the most notable and largest opening—running 70K sq. ft.—for the family since its original spot in Anaheim. As of May, family said they still had not seen a lull in customer traffic.

QUOTABLE: “It says a lot about not only our core customer that we’ve served for many, many years, but also how it’s attracted and it’s been enjoyed by customers of all walks of life. We want to share this with more communities.”  — Joshua González
