The insurance industry is known as tough, full of cold calling, difficult problems and skeptical customers. Some may consider it dull.
Owners of insurance businesses know they must entice their workers with something more than regular salaries.
Several firms on this week’s list of insurance brokers have clearly succeeded: they were also on the Business Journal’s annual list of the Best Places to Work in Orange County, published July 5.
These firms and some of the benefits they provide are:
• Irvine-based Burnham Benefits Insurance Services, No. 1 among midsized companies (those with between 50 and 249 employees), offers 15 hours of paid volunteer time and year-round celebrations, including birthday parties.
• Aliso Viejo’s Marsh & McLennan Insurance Agency LLC, No. 11 among large companies (those with more than 250 workers), offers paid time off for volunteering and a company-paid experience for exemplary employees.
• Irvine’s OneDigital, No. 14 among large companies, gives 100% match for donations and camaraderie events.
• Tustin’s Wood Gutmann & Bogart Insurance Brokers, No. 32 among midsized companies, provides flexible Fridays and a paid volunteer day.
• Another firm not on this week’s insurance broker list but tied to the insurance industry by providing it online leads is Costa Mesa’s SmartFinancial, which allows pets and games like cornhole in the office. It ranked No. 29 among midsized companies.
