EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION
Survey of 600 small and medium-sized businesses by national business organization, The Alternative Board
Eighty-two percent of responding small and medium-sized businesses granted wage increases to their employees in the past year; almost two-thirds said wages increased 5% or more, and 83% said they base compensation increases on merit. While 73% said they increased their workforce size in 1999, 66% said the shortage of qualified employees remained their No. 1 concern. Turnover among employees under age 30 was cited as a major problem for 75% of the companies.
