COST OF DRIVING
Survey of car ownership costs by Runzheimer International
Owing and operating a typical mid-size car in 1960 cost slightly less than 10 cents per mile, or $1,394 per year, assuming a trade-in after four years and 60,000 miles. For 2000-model-year cars, those costs have risen to $6,880 per year or 45.9 cents per mile.
The inflation rate, however, climbed 447% from 1960 through 1998, while car costs have risen “only” 394%.
