Smurfit-Stone Closing, Selling Fullerton Plant

Chicago-based cardboard box maker Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. is closing its Fullerton site as it trades up for a more modern plant in Cerritos.

The company’s 15 acres in Fullerton haven’t been listed on the market yet, according to officials with the city. The location near the Riverside (91) Freeway is expected to stay industrial.

“They want to sell it by the end of the year,” said Nicole Coats, Fullerton’s manager of economic development, referring to Smurfit-Stone. “The plan is to keep it industrial zoned.”

Smurfit-Stone has seen its profits suffer amid high costs for energy, transportation and raw material. The company didn’t respond to calls for comment.

With a weak real estate market, bids for the site aren’t likely to be as high as they would have been a couple of years ago.
