Smith Micro Acquires Software Products

Aliso Viejo-based Smith Micro Software Inc., a maker of software for mobile phones that allows users to download and play music files, has acquired the products of Australia’s busineSMS Software.

Terms weren’t disclosed.

BusineSMS makes software that allows people to send photos, songs and videos from their computers to their mobile phones. The company also makes software development kits that allow programmers to add messaging and other features to Web sites.

BusineSMS was started in Melbourne in 2002. The company’s research and development is in Australia with offices in Atlanta and Boston.

Smith Micro was started in 1983 as a seller of fax software. It’s been riding high of late thanks to a a contract a few years ago with New York-based Verizon Wireless to provide software to get laptops, digital assistants and wireless phones linked to the Internet on citywide networks.

The company also sells Verizon software for its V-Cast music service.

Smith Micro has a market value of about $500 million with yearly sales of about $80 million.
