Buchanan Street Partners in Newport Beach raised $200,000 at its Challenge for Children, put on by Buchanan Children’s Charities. This year’s event took the form of a multi-sport competition with 45 teams. The event’s proceeds were given directly to charities with programs for children: Talk About Curing Autism, Miocean, Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Providence Speech and Hearing Center each received a $50,000 donation. The Buchanan Street Partners team raised an additional $2,500 by auctioning a day with the USC football team and coach Pete Carroll.
The Robert S. and Georgia L. Roth Family Foundation donated $2.3 million to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian to endow a chair position within Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute.
The North American Foundation for the Cure of Diabetes raised $75,000 at its annual Taste for the Cure and Wine Auction in Costa Mesa. Proceeds from the event will fund an islet cell transplantation program at UCI Medical Center. The foundation’s chairman, Jerry Stefani, has a son who will undergo the transplant procedure this year.
Friends of the Santa Ana Zoo raised $70,000 at its Carrousel Animalia Zoofari gala. KOCE’s Ed Arnold co-chaired the event along with Sandy Segerstrom Daniels. Howard and Karin Hall and Ron and Joyce Glazier were honored with awards for their longtime devotion to the zoo. Chuck Dreyer handled the auction duties.
The Child Abuse Prevention Center raised $70,000 at its Charity Golf Classic, sponsored by Wells Fargo & Co. The money will support in-home child abuse prevention, parenting education and mental health programs. Ed Inal of Western Digital Corp. and Jeff Shepard of Cresa Partners LLC co-chaired the event for the fourth consecutive year.
The Tuttle-Click Automotive Group in Irvine donated $50,000 to Saddleback College. The money will be distributed as scholarships to Saddleback students taking automotive technology classes.
Local volunteers from Home Depot Inc., Swinerton Inc. and ValleyCrest Cos. donated their time to construct a 300-foot wall and landscape the Torii Hunter Field in Placentia. The local Boys & Girls Clubs will have access to the field. Snell & Wilmer LLP Partner Jon Frank founded the Magical Builders organization, which launched construction on the field last year. Angels’ center fielder Torii Hunter matched the Angels Baseball Foundation’s initial $50,000 donation for the field’s construction.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Orange County/Inland Empire chapter in Santa Ana raised $40,000 at its Cruise for a Cure. Event Co-Chairs Ted and Connie O’Connor entertained about 100 guests with a sunset cruise through Newport Harbor aboard a 120-foot yacht. Event proceeds will help fight leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.
Money Mailer LLC in Garden Grove, along with 11 of its local franchisees, donated $25,000 of free advertising to promote the first radiothon to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Orange County. The fundraising event was broadcast live on 102.7 KIIS-FM. Money mailer sends envelopes to 600,000 homes in Orange County.
Commercial Real Estate Women of Orange County raised $25,000 for Santa Ana nonprofit Wiseplace, which helps homeless women prepare to re-enter society. Crew-OC partnered with event cosponsor Greater Southern California Chapter of Certified Commercial Investment Members.
Art & Creativity for Healing received $15,000 from the May and Stanley Smith Charitable Trust. The Laguna Niguel nonprofit will use the donation to support its largest community partnership program, Families and Communities Acting Together.
Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, part of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., donated $10,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County at a special big for a day event in Irvine. Financial representative and big brother of the year Paul Castillo was recognized by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation for his volunteer work, prompting the donation.
