Edwards Lifesciences Corp. beat expectations for third-quarter operating profit but posted a net loss with one-time charges.
The Irvine heart valve maker earned $30 million before charges, up from $24.6 million a year earlier.
Sales came in at $241 million, up 7%.
Analysts expected Edwards to earn $27 million before charges on $243.3 million in quarterly sales.
Edwards posted a $4.4 million net loss for the quarter, versus a profit of $12.4 million a year ago.
Charges included $21.4 million for a charitable contribution and an investment write-down.
For the year, Edwards said it expects sales of about $1 billion and net income growth of about 18%, before charges.
