Irvine’s Comarco Inc., best known for its gear for testing wireless phone networks, picked up some contracts for its other business, freeway call boxes.
Comarco said it was awarded $3.9 million worth of projects by the San Diego Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies.
The company plans to upgrade 1,400 call boxes with digital and text messaging and redo 1,000 call box sites to better serve the disabled.
Comarco said it expects to start work on the projects in the second quarter.
“We are continuing to see a resurgence in demand as counties and local agencies upgrade to digital wireless technologies,” said Tom Franza, Comarco’s chief executive.
