Six Make BusinessWeek ‘Hot’ List

Several Orange County companies are “hot,” according to BusinessWeek’s Hot Growth Companies list.

The ranking lists 100 growing companies to watch. Six entries were from OC.

The highest ranking local company: Costa Mesa-based surfwear designer Volcom Inc. at No. 11.

The others and where they ranked: No. 17 Anaheim-based Multi-Fineline Electronix Inc.; No. 21 Costa Mesa-based Resources Connection Inc.; No. 30 Costa Mesa-based Ceradyne Inc.; No. 49 Irvine-based Quality Systems Inc.; and No. 60 Santa Ana-based TTM Technologies Inc.

The companies were ranked by three-year sales, earnings growth and return on investment.

They had to have annual sales of $50 million to $1.5 billion and a market value of $25 million or more. Shares had to go for $5 or more and be actively traded.

The No. 1 company on the list was Houston-based Vaalco Energy, which finds and pumps oil off of Africa’s Atlantic Coast.

The No. 2 company was just over the county line in Corona. Hansen Natural Corp., which makes the Monster energy drink, took the spot. The company’s stock is up fivefold in the past year.
