Filipino supermarket chain Island Pacific opened its first Orange County location in Lake Forest this month, adding to the county’s growing collection of specialty grocers.
Headquartered in City of Industry, the chain celebrated the grand opening on Oct. 7 at the Lake Forest Marketplace, about a block from the San Diego (5) Freeway along El Toro Road.
The company describes its goal as promoting Filipino food to the world through the market’s offerings and in-house options. Island Pacific will have a food court called Philhouse and a bakery named San Honore. Fresh seafood and produce are the grocer’s best-known offerings in addition to its Asian grocery items.
Artwork from Long Beach-based muralist Bodeck Luna and Filipino cultural artist Kristian Kabuay are featured throughout the store, along with Tagalog translations and other signage.
The Lake Forest property is now one of 18 Island Pacific locations across California and Nevada.
Specialty grocers have made notable real estate moves in 2022, with supermarkets behind four of the six largest retail leases in OC during the first four months of the year.
H Mart opened its sixth OC location in August, in Irvine, and is adding to the Korean grocer’s 90-plus stores with another spot in Westminster next year. Buena Park-based Asian grocer 99 Ranch Market has also leased two more locations in Tustin and Aliso Viejo.
Other stores expanding their OC footprint in the past year include Bristol Farms’ 34,000-square-foot Newfound Market at the Irvine Spectrum, and new Amazon Fresh locations coming to Laguna Hills and Mission Viejo.
