The S&P 500 fell 0.29% to 1,551.63 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was off 0.07% to 14,437.61, while the Nasdaq was down 0.42% to 3,239.11.
The yield on a 10-year treasury bond fell 1.70% to 2.02%.
The price of gold rose 0.84% to $1,591 per ounce.
Shares of Irvine-based disk drive maker Western Digital Corp. rose about 3% to $49.33 for a market value of $11.83 billion. The company said its Western Digital Capital investment was part of a $51 million round of financing for San Jose-based solid-state disk drive maker Skyera Inc.
Newport Beach-based Acacia Research Corp. was down 2.37% to $28.42 for a market value of $1.39 billion.
Shares of Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp. fell back about 3% to $13.72 after closing up 5.6% Monday on a “buy” rating for the company. Clean Energy had a recent market value of $1.22 billion.
