The S&P 500 rose 0.29% to 1,520.33 in afternoon trading Thursday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.13% to 14,093.04, while the Nasdaq was up 0.32% to 3,172.44.

The yield on a 10-year treasury bond fell 0.79% to 1.89%.

The price of gold was off 0.95% to $1,580.50 per ounce.

Shares of Newport Beach specialty chemicals maker American Vanguard Corp. fell back about 3.5% to $31.05 after rising 10% on Wednesday before the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter and full-year results. American Vanguard had a recent market value of $866.18 million.

Irvine-based Impac Mortgage Holdings Inc. slumped about 19% to $12.26, a day after the company reported a fourth-quarter loss compared with a profit in the year-ago period. Impac Mortgage had a recent market value of $96.21 million.

Shares of Newport Beach patent licensing company Acacia Research Corp. were down about 5% to $28.01 for a market value of $1.35 billion.
