The S&P 500 rose 0.53% to 1,528 in afternoon trading Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.34% to 14,029, while the Nasdaq was up 0.39% to 3,205.

The yield on a 10-year treasury bond was off 0.20% to 2%.

The price of gold was down 0.23% to $1,606 per ounce.

Shares of Irvine-based homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp. were down about 3% to $8 for a market value of $2.8 billion. Homebuilders, including KB Home and PulteGroup Inc., were down in afternoon trading Tuesday.

Anaheim drug maker Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. was up about 5% to $30 after closing up about 3% on Friday. Questcor had a recent market value of $1.8 billion.

Shares of Newport Beach-based networking chipmaker Mindspeed Technologies Inc. was up about 6% to $5 after the company announced an updated version of its Transcede line of baseband processors and an extended licensing agreement with Mountain View-based CEVA Inc.. Mindspeed had a recent market value of $219.3 million.

Foothill Ranch-based Skilled Healthcare Group Inc. was up about 10% to $6 for a market value of $232.8 million. The company reached a settlement agreement with the state of California related to staffing and patient care, with some saying the settlement could lead to new financing from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
