The S&P 500 rose 0.26% to 1,521 in afternoon trading Tuesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.37% to 14,023, while the Nasdaq was up 0.03% to 3,193.
The yield on a 10-year bond rose 1.59% to 1.98%.
The price of gold was up 0.03% to $1,649 per ounce.
Shares of Irvine homebuilder Standard Pacific Corp. were up about 6% to $8.38 for a market value of $2.9 billion. Homebuilders were generally up in midday trading Tuesday.
Irvine healthcare software maker Quality Systems Inc. was down about 2% to $19 for a market value of $1.1 billion.
