Toshiba Vet Ascends to Helm of $1B Documents Division

Mathews: started in marketing department

Irvine-based Toshiba America Business Services Inc., which provides document and work-flow services and sells printers, has tapped a longtime insider to lead the company.

Mark Mathews was promoted from president and chief operating officer to chief executive this week. The 19-year Toshiba veteran began his tenure in the marketing department and ascended through the corporate ranks to run one of the county’s largest private companies.

Toshiba America, a unit of Japan-based To-shiba Corp., has annual sales of roughly $1 billion and employs 300 people in three local offices and 3,000 companywide.

Biggest Customers

The company’s biggest customers include Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Nascar, ConAgra Foods Inc., SunTrust Banks Inc., American Airlines Inc. and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.

Mathews replaces Matt Yamada, the chairman and chief executive since 2009 who’s returning to Japan in a management role with Toshiba TEC Corp., a retail arm of the parent company.

Junichi Kawasaki, vice president of Toshiba TEC America, was named board chairman for Toshiba America.

Mathews will continue to supervise operations of Toshiba America’s Electronic Imaging division and Toshiba Business Solutions, which has office-equipment dealers throughout the U.S. and Latin America. He also will oversee the company’s local research and development unit, and wholesale and manufacturing operations in South Dakota.

Toshiba America has seen rising demand in all segments of late, Mathews said.

“The sales pipeline is the biggest it’s been in four years,” he said. “We are very, very growth focused.”

Rising Demand

Toshiba America primarily works with leasing companies to get its products into businesses. Customers typically lease equipment for three years, though that timetable was stretched when the economy tanked, Mathews said.

The new chief executive’s first priorities will be establishing roll-out dates for recent and new initiatives.

Toshiba America recently launched Toshiba Managed Business Services, a division aligning Toshiba technology with the office needs of Fortune 500 companies. The company also recently secured a federal contract to provide data security and storage products and services to various agencies.

This summer Toshiba America will relocate from current local headquarters into a larger space at 9740 Irvine Blvd., home to a cluster of Toshiba companies. Those include Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., the digital products, imaging and telecommunications-systems arm of Toshiba America, which was formed in 1999. n
