Tustin Cottages: final phase under construction Sunday, August 1, 2010 SANTA ANA Plans are in place for a major cathedral near Bear Street and MacArthur Boulevard. The Diocese of Orange is gearing up for the second phase of a 14-acre complex, which received city approval in 2003. The Diocese plans to build the cathedral near an existing parish, which opened five years ago as the first phase of the project. The cathedral is set to be about 45,000 square feet. The Diocese plans to build another 54,000 square feet of space in supplementary buildings. The city also approved an additional 44,000 square feet of underground space for the project. The cathedral will be the seat for Tod Brown, the Bishop of the Diocese of Orange, who previously was at the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Orange. The Diocese expects to serve 1.2 million people from 59 parishes at the Cathedral. Church officials will give preference to local contractors for the project. The cost of the cathedral was not disclosed. The design phase is being funded by an anonymous gift, and fundraising efforts for the cathedral will begin in earnest soon. Craig Hartman has been named the cathedral’s architect. Hartman designed the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland, which opened in 2008. The parish will remain open during the construction of the cathedral. TUSTIN The final phase of the Tustin Cottages is underway near the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway by Red Hill Avenue. The latest construction will add 27 townhome apartments, bringing the total to 93 units. Rent starts at $2,400 per month. The size of the townhome apartments will range from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet. The units, which are available in three- and four-bedroom models, come with two-car attached garages and on-site laundry facilities. Construction is expected to be completed in February. This is the third phase of the complex, which started as a condominium development in 2008. Arcadia-based Tustin Manor LLC, the land developer, took the condos off the market after the economic downturn. In March 2009, Tustin Manor reopened the complex as an apartment complex and continued expanding. Last month, the second phase was finished. More than half of the townhome apartments in phase two have already been leased. The contractor is Arcadia-based First Pacific Builders. IRVINE Lumexis Corp., a software company that makes in-flight entertainment systems, moved its corporate office from Costa Mesa to Jamboree Road and Kelvin Avenue. The 33,000-square-foot building previously was used as commercial office space. Lumexis spent $350,000 to upgrade the building, which will be used to create, test, install and repair its software. Building upgrades included a new engineering lab, a gym, a repair lab and private offices. Lumexis outsources its manufacturing. The company will lease the land from the Newport Beach-based Irvine Company and will be the building’s only tenant. The upgrades were done by Irvine-based Casco Corp. BREA The first expansion phase is nearly complete at the Brea Plaza Shopping Center. Phase one includes three buildings and five structural renovations. The anchor stores will be Total Wine & More, Mother’s Market & Kitchen and Borders bookstore. Total Wine & More opened last month. The store is about 18,000 square feet. The total expansion plan for the shopping center calls for six buildings and six structural renovations. It is expected to be complete in January and cost $35 million. The developer is Michigan-based Bosc Equities in partnership with Brea-based MHA Consulting Inc. The contractors are KPRS Construction Services Inc. and Huntington Beach-based Dennis Lorton & Associates Inc. Architects of Orange is the architect. ANAHEIM Another Anaheim Ducks team store is under construction at the Honda Center. It will be on the stadium’s San Manuel Premium Level, which is for club members and suite holders. The boutique will be about 500 square feet, a smaller version of the team store located on the ground level. It will have glass walls and two televisions to broadcast live events going on in the stadium. The store will sell a variety of team merchandise, including Ducks-branded Adidas Group’s golf clothes, Reebok International Ltd.’s signature Duck line and team collectables. Suite holders will be able to pre-order items and have them delivered to their suites. Construction will not affect any other structures in the arena. The store is slated to be finished in August. |
