The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.78% to 16,372.34, while the Nasdaq was off 1.51% to 4,085.68.
The yield on a 10-year Treasury bond fell 0.89% to 2.66%.
The price of gold rose 0.77% to $1,300.60 per ounce.
Irvine chipmaker Broadcom Corp. was off about 5% to $29.61 for a market value of $17.20 billion.
The company reported better than expected first-quarter results and guided second quarter revenue in line with Wall Street analyst expectations.
Santa Ana-based Ingram Micro Inc. fell about 3% to $26.78 for a market value of $4.14 billion.
The company reported first-quarter adjusted profit below consensus estimates earlier this week.
Aliso Viejo-based chipmaker Microsemi Corp. slipped about 7% to $23.82 a day after releasing third-quarter revenue guidance below consensus estimates. It had a recent market value of $2.26 billion.
