Angels Preview

For the first time in years, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s dominance of the American League Western division isn’t a sure thing.

The team, which has won five of the past six division titles, still is a contender. But after losing some key players and a tough spring training, the Angels are apt to have to fight for a division title that has been theirs for the taking.

And that should make for a good season. The team’s likely rival for the pennant: the Seattle Mariners, which made big offseason moves, including landing former Angel Chone Figgins and ace pitcher Cliff Lee from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Texas Rangers, which picked up fading slugger Vladimir Guerrero from the Angels, also could be a factor.

Much of the Angels’ hopes are pinned on former New York Yankee Hideki Matsui (who’s generating buzz for the team in Japan), centerfielder Torii Hunter and other names from last season. At stake is what Angels fans have become accustom to: a postseason berth and a chance to vie for a World Series title—something that’s eluded owner Arte Moreno since he bought the team in 2003.

However the team does, 2010 stands to be the biggest season in Anaheim since 2002’s World Series win, thanks to July’s All-Star game. It’s expected to draw thousands and generate about $100 million in activity.

All-Star game signs are up around Angel Stadium of Anaheim, where the parking lot’s “Big A” was renovated last year and flat-screen TVs recently were installed inside. And Matsui has brought some new advertising from Japanese companies.

The Angels expect to draw another 3 million fans this year, according to spokesman Tim Mead. Meanwhile, preparations are starting for the team’s 50th anniversary in 2011, he said.
