Angels, MLB Outline $5M in All-Star Giving

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Major League Baseball plan to give $5 million to local and national charities as part of July’s All-Star Game in Anaheim.

The team’s charitable arm and the league outlined plans for the money this week with donations going toward healthcare, education, youth sports and community service.

A “substantial portion” of the money is set to go to local charities, according to the league.

The league and the Angels currently are redoing baseball fields at Anaheim’s Pioneer Park.

Money also is set to go toward:

  • Refurbishment of a Santa Ana home used for temporary housing and care for veterans.
  • Building of baseball fields and a gardening area at the Santa Ana Boys & Girls Club.
  • Creation of the Angels Jr. RBI Program with the 16 Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange County chapters to baseball among young people.
  • College scholarships for 25 eighth-graders.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, which provides youth mentoring.
  • Orangewood Children’s Foundation, which aids abused and neglected children.
  • Improvement of amateur baseball facilities, sponsorship of youth clinics and high school and college All Star-Games.
  • Special Olympics Southern California.
  • Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The league also plans to use proceeds from events around the All-Star Game to support national groups including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Stand Up To Cancer, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Make-A-Wish.

The giving is an annual tradition in areas that host the All-Star Game.

Last year, the hosting St. Louis Cardinals distributed $2 million among several nonprofits.

The numbers have gotten bigger through the years: In 1989, the last time the Angels hosted the game, the team received $240,000 for local charities.

“We’re so excited about it, to have this opportunity to leave our mark,” Dennis Kuhl, chairman of Angels Baseball LP, told the Business Journal in February.

The team has been working with the league for the past few months on identifying nonprofits for funding.

The All-Star game is set for July 13 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim with other events before and after the game.
