About the Best Places to Work

The Business Journal’s Best Places to Work is the result of months of surveying workers and management at hundreds of local employers.

The final list of 100 companies represents those that scored highest on a proprietary ranking done for the Business Journal by Harrisburg, Pa.-based Best Companies Group, which produces similar lists for publications across the country.

They are ranked by category: small, 15 to 49 U.S. employees; medium, 50 to 249; and large, 250 or more.

The ranking is based on an employer questionnaire that details policies, practices and benefits and an employee engagement and satisfaction survey about culture, training, pay and benefits and other areas.

Employers are given the two surveys as part of the assessment process.

Just about all types of employers in the county were eligible: locally based companies, subsidiaries of companies headquartered elsewhere, professional services firms, banks, government agencies, nonprofits, hospitals and universities.

Employers had to have at least 15 workers in OC to be considered and needed to have been in business for at least a year.

There’s no cost to enter. Survey reports, if desired, are available for purchase from Best Companies Group.
