PHILANTHROPY July 29, 2013

Keeping Up Appearances

The nonprofit Orange County-based organization Laura’s House was one of a number of beneficiaries of the 2013 Deloitte IMPACT Day on June 7. Laura’s House works to change attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe place for individuals and families affected by abuse. Twenty employees from Deloitte’s OC practice helped Laura’s House with a number of repair and beautification projects. They installed shelving and doorstops, deep-cleaned floors; repaired drywall and locks; and touched up paint, plus donated new pillows for a living room couch.

Fighting Alzheimer’s

The seventh annual Visionary Women Luncheon, hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association Orange County, drew nearly 300 guests and supporters. The June 14 event honored caregivers and scientists dedicated to improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia. Proceeds from the event, held at Rancho Las Lomas in Silverado, will benefit programs and services offered free of charge to local families impacted by Alzheimer’s.

Caregivers honored at the luncheon included Jane Mahakian of Aging Matters Inc., San Clemente; Aileen Sherman of Irvine Cottages Memory Care, Dana Point; Stephanie Giekes, Comfort Keepers of Anaheim; Dolores Estrella of Buena Park; Josefina Ortiz of Riverside; and Deziree Bedolla of Garden Grove.

This year’s luncheon also honored people working on fighting Alzheimer’s.

$245K to 15 Charities

Fifteen Orange County charities received $245,000 in workforce development grants from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The grants will go toward nonprofits’ workforce development initiatives aimed to help the community connect the unemployed, underemployed, veterans, youth and those with disabilities with training and employment opportunities. Grant recipients were the KOCE-TV Foundation, Olive Crest Treatment Centers and Segerstrom Center for the Arts, among others.

An Enduring Message

Goodwill of Orange County raised more than $125,000 at the Goodwill Invitational Golf Tournament on June 28 to benefit Enduring Independence, a national program designed to encourage businesses to hire recently discharged veterans.

The tournament served as the launch event for the program.

The launch included a guest appearance by Gen. George W. Casey Jr., former head of the Iraq Multinational Force and chief of staff for the U.S. Army from 2007 to 2011. Casey also received the first-ever Enduring Independence Service Award for his support of American military veterans. The golf tournament and launch event were at the Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point.

Driving Expansion

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana launched its Expansion Campaign to raise $2.25 million to build a 3,500-square-foot teen center.

The money will also go toward extensive renovations of its main club building to serve 20% of additional youth ages 5 to 13. The renovated main club is also expected to provide 50% more families with community outreach services. The campaign is being kick-started by organization board member Anne MacPherson West, whose family foundation will make a $500,000 contribution in honor of her late father, Joe MacPherson, who died in 2007. Joe MacPherson founded and owned the OC-based Team MacPherson car dealership group.
