The JCPenney store at the Westminster Mall is closing its doors before peak holiday shopping season in November.
The department anchor will remain open to the public through Nov. 16 and will shut down by Nov. 21, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter filed by Texas-based Penney OpCo LLC.
Approximately 76 employees will be affected by the permanent closure starting Nov. 10, including 19 cashiers, 16 sales floor associates and the store’s general manager.
The company said it anticipates offering some employment in other JCPenney locations and told employees on Aug. 18 that leadership would be looking at other positions that might be available.
The Westminster Mall recorded taxable sales of $120 million for the 12 months ended June 2024, down 15.6% from the prior period. Macy’s and Target are the center’s other major tenants.
Mall landlord Washington Prime Group (WPG) announced plans in April to purge its portfolio following the company’s 2021 Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing.
The remaining JCPenney locations in Orange County are in Santa Ana and Brea.
