Famed Acoustics Pro on Chapman Arts Center

Toyota: has Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A. on resume

Chapman University President Jim Doti is determined to make sure the school hits the right note with the performing arts center it has planned for its campus in Orange.

He’s counting on world-renowed Yasuhisa Toyota, the acoustician behind the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, to get the job done.

Chapman has completed its $64 million fund-raising campaign for the Chapman Uni-versity Center for the Performing Arts, and is ready to begin construction later this year, with an opening expec-ted by 2014 (see Doti’s OC 50 profile in Spe-cial Report starting on page 21).

“It’s going to be an incredible facility for our community,” Doti said. “It’ll help serve the central part of OC. Some of the northern communities are underserved in terms of having a performing arts facility.”

Toyota is president of the U.S. division of Tokyo-based Nagata Acoustics. He’s worked on projects ranging from the Helsinki Music Centre in Finland to the Shenzhen Cultural Center’s Concert Hall in China.

He’s also worked in OC before, overseeing the acoustical design of the $73 million, 95,000-square-foot performing arts center at Soka University of America in Aliso Viejo.

Chapman has held performances at its Memorial Hall, a 900-seat auditorium built in the 1920s. Its 88,000-square-foot concert hall is expected to house 1,050 seats.
