Coming off a hiring push that added nearly 600 local employees over the past year, and tens of thousands of employees worldwide, security giant Allied Universal is now gearing up to move to its expanded headquarters in Irvine next month.
Allied, Orange County’s largest private company by revenue, earlier this year signed a lease for the entirety of a 53,360-square-foot office at the Market Place Center, an Irvine Co. building park located next to the developer’s Market Place shopping center, near the intersection of Jamboree Road and the Santa Ana (5) Freeway.
The company is moving its headquarters from its 35,185-square-foot hub along the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway in Santa Ana to the building, marking a 52% increase, to “accommodate our ambitious growth aspirations,” Allied Universal Chief Human Resources Officer Don Tefft told the Business Journal.
“The new building includes more space for our teams,” Tefft said.
“The state-of-the-art design and cutting-edge technology will promote teamwork, collaboration, and productivity.”
The office at 450 Exchange brings Allied’s local real estate footprint to about 65,000 square feet of office space. The company will still maintain a Santa Ana base; its technology services and janitorial services divisions are located at 1815 E. Wilshire Ave., while it also counts an office in Orange.
Ramped Up Run Rate
The expansion comes as Allied adds to its headcount following new acquisitions and increasing demand for security services.
“We are seeing growth in almost all areas including our traditional guarding services as well as our integrated solutions which can be designed to meet the unique needs of each client,” Tefft said.
The firm’s largest-ever acquisition occurred last year with the $5.1 billion buy of London-based competitor, G4S PLC.
The deal more than doubled Allied’s revenue run rate to $20 billion and made the firm “a truly global company,” Tefft said, adding “positions have been added worldwide as a result of organic growth to support our organization worldwide.”
The G4S acquisition is 1 of 17 announced by Allied Universal in the past 18 months, with more on the horizon.
With 800,000 employees companywide, Allied is now the world’s seventh largest private employer.
Chief Executive Steve Jones told the Business Journal in August that Allied “will continue to be acquisitive, both U.S. and internationally.”
Allied Universal moved up two slots to become Orange County’s ninth largest employer with its local headcount up nearly 11% to 5,929, according to the Business Journal’s Nov. 14 list of OC’s top employers.
That local base of employment includes corporate positions and on-the-ground security personnel at many of the area’s top malls, office parks and entertainment venues. Its security personnel are a familiar site at Irvine Co.-owned shopping centers and other properties across the area. Other large clients include local hospitals.
The company expects to reach $25 billion in annual sales by the end of 2025.
