PHILANTHROPY

Take a Shot on a Legacy

The 13th annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout raised nearly $500,000 to support CureDuchenne’s mission to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).

Held Sept. 13-14 at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, the event garnered crucial funds and marked a leadership transition.

Ryan Getzlaf, former Anaheim Ducks captain, and his wife Paige have led the event for 13 years, raising over $6.3 million for Duchenne research. This year, they passed the torch to Anaheim Ducks All-Star Troy Terry and his wife Danielle.

Friday’s MVP Dinner featured updates from Debra Miller and her husband Paul Miller, co-founder, CureDuchenne, and president and CEO, PMG Corporation, and their son Hawken Miller, who lives with Duchenne.

The weekend included a golf tournament with fun activities like games, giveaways, and a hole-in-one opportunity to win a Porsche. Golfers enjoyed food from local vendors and beverages from sponsors like Monster Energy, Simon Family Vineyards and Brewery X.

Getzlaf Golf Shootout sponsors included Porsche, F&F Capital Group, WHGC P.L.C., Air Control Systems, Ayres Hotels, Ayres Construction Company, Independent Capital Management Inc., Engels Janzen, Wayne Sanderson Farms, TSG Wealth Management, Monster Energy, PMG Corporation, Crepe Story, Happy Dad and The Butchery.

It’s a Zoo Out There

The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ) celebrated its 32nd annual Zoofari Gala, Ports of Call, on Aug. 17.

This year’s event transported guests to a tropical island, creating an enchanting evening that broke all previous fundraising records by netting more than $120,000. The funds will support the zoo’s vital programs.

The gala was hosted at the Santa Ana Zoo in Prentice Park and drew 280 guests. As guests arrived, they were welcomed by various animals accompanied by zoo education staff and volunteers.

In addition to mingling with zoo creatures, guests enjoyed exclusive tours of the zoo grounds, rode the Fifty Monkey Ferris Wheel and visited the primates that have made the Santa Ana zoo famous.

The evening’s décor and themed photo opportunities added to the island ambiance. Following the opening reception, guests enjoyed a multicourse dining experience complemented by a fully hosted bar.

A highlight of the evening was a special award presented to Mark Edwards, Ph.D, associate professor, animal nutrition, Cal Poly Animal Science Department, who has been instrumental in shaping the animal diets at the Santa Ana Zoo, ensuring that each diet is expertly crafted to meet the nutritional needs of the diverse species under the zoo’s care.

Bert L. Howe & Associates Inc. was the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors include Republic Services; Bev Creech Tax Prep; City of Santa Ana; Hall Griffin LLP; Mike Harrah, founder, president, Caribou Industries and U.S. Bank.

40 Years of Family

Families Forward welcomed nearly 400 supporters to its 40th anniversary Light Up the Night fundraising gala on Sept. 7.

Held at the Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club, Families Forward celebrated those who have supported its mission over the last four decades, helping tens of thousands of families in need, while also casting a vision toward the future where every family has a home.

The sold-out event netted more than $400,000, which enables Families Forward to continue providing essential programs and services, including housing, counseling, job placement assistance and educational programs for family experiencing homelessness.

Light Up the Night’s presenting sponsor was U.S. Bank. Additional sponsors included CLA-VAL, Pacific Premier Bank, Apriem Advisors, AvalonBay Communities Inc., Kia and the Irvine Co.

The evening’s highlights included the recognition of honorees who lead by example with their philanthropic spirit. Among these were the Irvine Co., which received Families Forward’s Partner in Hope Award.

This honor recognized the Irvine Co.’s longtime connection to the Families Forward’s mission. The company provided the five apartments and two farmhouses that launched Families Forward into the organization it is today, providing stabilizing services to thousands of families each year.

The Margie Wakeham Legacy Award was presented to Roger Grable, attorney, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP, a donor, volunteer and leader with Families Forward for more than 30 years. Grable’s leadership played an integral role in doubling the organization’s housing inventory.
