PHILANTHROPY–Week of May 12

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County, a nonprofit organization that trains and supervises community volunteers to mentor and advocate for children in the foster care system, honored its leading supporters and volunteers at the annual Celebration of Children Black & White Ball at the Island Hotel on April 25.

More than 450 guests joined to celebrate CASA’s 29 years of service to abused, abandoned and neglected children in Orange County. This year’s event netted more than $780,000.

Anton Segerstrom, chief financial officer of South Coast Plaza, his wife Jennifer, and Orange County philanthropists Lisa Argyros and Stephanie Argyros each received CASA’s highest award, Children’s Champion. Retired business leader, philanthropist, and Newport Coast resident Larry Wilson was honored as Outstanding Advocate for his service to child abuse victims through his roles as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, an Educational Representative, and a Family Connections Advocate.

The 32nd annual Gentleman’s Haberdashery took place April 11 at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. The event featured 40 of Orange County’s most prominent male executives and community leaders modeling a full range of menswear. More than 450 guests enjoyed a gourmet lunch during the fashion show, which featured looks by event sponsors St. Croix, At Ease for Men, J. Hilburn, Burns 1876 and Gary’s. The Gentleman’s Haberdashery provides the major funding for the Heart of Jesus Retreat Center in Santa Ana. The event raised nearly $250,000.

Gary Urban, chief executive of GMU Geotechnical Inc., was one of the featured models. His wife Donna was the event co-chair.

On April 26, Women Helping Women/Men2Work proved that its mission of empowering employment success is possible by raising more than $116,000 at its annual fundraising event based on the theme of the 1960s television show “Mission Impossible.”

Event Operative sponsors—the Tustin branch of Farmers & Merchants Bank, First Bank, Premier Business Centers and the Tarsadia Foundation—hosted 250 guests at a retro-inspired gourmet luncheon and fashion show at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

Proceeds will support WHW’s Employment Success Program, which offers comprehensive employment support services at no charge and with no obligation to job seekers looking for better lives.

Tony Moiso, president and chief executive of Rancho Mission Viejo LLC joined more than 250 guests at the Shea Therapeutic Riding Center’s Sixth Annual Leaders for Philanthropy Night on April 10. He served as the event’s keynote speaker. The event raised $30,000, nearly twice the 2013 amount.

It was held in collaboration with the Orange County alumni associations of some of the country’s top business schools: Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, UCI, UCLA and USC. OCMBA, an alliance of Orange County/Southern California business school alumni groups, was a first-time event host. The night benefited The Shea Center, which annually serves more than 820 Orange County clients with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, Down syndrome and speech disorders.

Sponsors were Rancho Mission Viejo LLC, Farmers & Merchants Bank, San Clemente Villas by the Sea, and South County Auto Group.
