Berry Provides Specialized, Expert-Vetted AI to Help with Babies, Young Children

Parenting tech company Huckleberry Labs is harnessing AI to keep better track of sleeping babies and help guide their childhood development.

The Irvine-based company has introduced Berry, an AI-powered assistant embedded in its app that analyzes each child’s logged data, such as sleep, feeding and diaper activity.

It then combines it with pediatric guidance to deliver “tailored advice” to parents in real time.

“Huckleberry is an app that helps families find their flow by turning their child’s tracking into easier routines and smarter guidance,” company CEO Jessica Toh told the Business Journal on March 26.

“Berry is our new AI feature within the app that is built to give parents that guidance whenever they need it by understanding context,” she added.

Huckleberry says 5 million families are already using the 9-year-old company’s app.

“Berry automatically pulls in relevant logged data to ensure recommendations already have that personal context baked in,” according to Toh.

Sleep, Feeding, Diapers

Introduced earlier this year, Berry can also help parents quickly track multiple things at once—like sleep, feeding and diapers—through voice, text or photo upload.

“Think of Berry as a helping hand when you want to problem-solve quickly, track multiple events easily, and summarize your child’s recent habits—all in one place,” the company says.

It’s domain-specific and context-aware, meaning it considers a child’s sleep patterns and logs alongside established sleep frameworks to offer solutions customized to each parent.

Parents can use voice, text or even images to add logs in the app.

Voice Logs: Just say what happened (e.g., “She just had a 5-ounce bottle”), and Berry will log it.

Text Logs: Type or paste text to add logs.

Image Logs: Upload a screenshot from a childcare app or a photo of a handwritten note from grandma, and Berry will transcribe and log the data.

Batch Logging: A parent can catch up on multiple events at once, such as telling Berry to “Log pee diapers at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today.”

Help with Burning Questions

Berry is also designed for moments when a parent has a “burning question” or feels overwhelmed.

The company’s new AI chat is included in Huckleberry’s premium subscription, which gives families access to its full suite of offerings. Premium is $9.99/month when billed annually or $14.99/month.

The app is available for iPhones and Androids.

Huckleberry has 32 full-time employees and over 40 pediatric experts on its team. The privately held company doesn’t disclose revenue figures at this time.

Morningside, Spero, Tamarisc

Huckleberry’s primary investors are Morningside, Spero Ventures and Tamarisc, with total funding of $16.1 million.

“By teaming up pediatric experts with human-centered technology, the Huckleberry app provides over 5 million families with the trusted support they need to find clarity and confidence,” the company said in a Feb. 5 announcement introducing Berry.

For example, when asked about a challenge like short naps, Berry considers that child’s real-time patterns alongside vetted expertise to deliver tailored, actionable advice. Berry weighs a whole array of factors guided by a team of experts that spans lactation and occupational therapy in addition to sleep.

The company was co-founded by CEO Toh, whose resume includes stints at Genesys and Utopy, and her husband CTO Seng Oon Toh, who previously worked for Tamarisc Ventures and TMC Group.
