The Newport Beach City Council on Tuesday night cleared the way for a major redevelopment of the Newport Center skyline, voting unanimously to deny two appeals that sought to block the demolition of the iconic Edwards Big Newport movie theater.
The decision supports the Planning Commission’s approval last month, allowing Irvine-based developer Related California to replace the theater and a nearby fitness club with a pair of luxury high-rise condos totaling 150 units, a café and home office spaces at 210 and 300 Newport Center Drive.
The council’s vote effectively ends the fight led by community groups “Save Our Theater” and SAFER, which had argued that the project would destroy a cultural landmark and cause significant environmental impacts.
“It’s difficult for all seven of us here and for everyone in the audience and for staff,” said Newport Beach Councilmember Robyn Grant during the meeting. “The project is in character with already developed Irvine Co. projects, the PIMCO building, Pacific Life and other buildings in Newport Center. It’s pretty well serviced by the existing infrastructure.”
