Spireon Helps Truckers Keep Track of Trailers

Spireon Inc., an Irvine-based vehicle tracking company, has introduced a new set of tools to help trucking firms deal with ever-increasing amounts of data for their trailer management.

There’s been concern that trucking fleet managers could be overwhelmed with volumes of data and may lack the resources to properly analyze all the information to improve business performance.

To alleviate that burden, Spireon developed Intelligent Trailer Management (ITM) which was introduced at the American Trucking Associations’ conference in San Diego last month and is designed to help define the industry term “smart trailer.”

“Today, the term ‘smart trailer’ is broad, blurry and leaves carriers unsure of how an investment in such systems would generate a clear return,” said Roni Taylor, senior vice president of strategy and business development at Spireon. “This is why we have defined Intelligent Trailer Management for the industry—a newly enhanced trailer platform that makes it easy for carriers to gather and use data to reduce cost and increase utilization.”

Spireon’s tracking system FleetLocate and the company’s NSpire platform are the cornerstones of the ITM portfolio.

The tools help managers organize and analyze the data that improves fleet operational efficiency.

1B Events/Month

Collecting over 1 billion data events per month, FleetLocate, translates the data points into actionable intelligence so that fleet and asset managers have the information they need.

For instance, the Spireon ITM Smart Sensor Integration helps monitor tire pressure, doors and temperature probes.

The company also offers its IntelliScan cargo-sensing technology, which uses lasers and optical imaging to keep an eye on freight.

The product can capture images inside a trailer to visualize cargo, note possible damage and provide volumetric data to help less-than-truckload carriers maximize trailer capacity.

One of the key points of the platform is that it enables data sharing and custom analytics via Spireon’s recently formed partnership with San Mateo-based Snowflake, a cloud-based data warehouse.

The arrangement allows customers to access thousands of assets and years of historical data in seconds.

“We have been utilizing Snowflake’s data warehouse in the Spireon platform for some time,” Jason Penkethman, chief product and strategy officer at Spireon, told the Business Journal in September.

With the partnership, “other companies that utilize Snowflake’s data warehouse products will now be able to access the full depth and breadth of data available by directly connecting to Spireon’s Snowflake data warehouse.”
