PHILANTHROPY

Lives Without Limits

United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County’s annual black tie gala, Life Without Limits, was held April 2 at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach. More than 300 people attended the event, which raised $486,000. The Allergan Foundation, Argyros Family Foundation, D.L.D. Insurance Brokers Inc. and Horowitz Group were among the sponsors of the event, which raised money for UCP-OC’s mission to serve nearly 4,000 children and families affected by cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome and developmental delays.

David Horowitz, chairperson of Horowitz Group, and Dana Dowers, president and chief executive of D.L.D. Insurance, were honored for their support of the nonprofit group’s programs and services. Other honorees included Douglas Ingram, chief executive of Chase Pharmaceuticals; Dennis Kuhl, Angel’s Baseball chairperson; and David Pyott, former chief executive of Allergan PLC, for their continued investment in UCP-OC’s work.

You GLOW, Girl

Santa Ana-based Global G.L.O.W., or Girls Leading Our World, and LitWorld, based in New York, have collaborated to launch an initiative called “HerStory,” which seeks to draw global attention to the inequities facing young girls around the world. The two groups held their first HerStory Summit in New York from March 18 to 22 during the United Nations’ 60th Annual Commission on the Status of Women. Kylie Schuyler, founder and executive director of Global G.L.O.W., was a featured presenter at the summit, which brought together nearly 100 girls from 11 countries.

“The Global HerStory Summit was a momentous occasion for the HerStory Campaign,” Schuyler said. “Our goal is to draw global attention to the profound inequities that arise from the silencing of female voices. We hope by shedding light on the experiences of girls, we will inspire a global dialogue to create more just, vibrant and sustainable communities.”

Global G.L.O.W. is supported by several Orange County-based businesses, including Pacific Investment Management Co.

Passion for PBS

On April 9, 225 business leaders, philanthropists and public television supporters came together to demonstrate commitment to PBS SoCal, the flagship Public Broadcasting Service station for Greater Los Angeles and Southern California, at the eighth annual PBS Gala. The event, held at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, raised more than $480,000, which will support PBS SoCal’s efforts to close the achievement gap and change the way children learn through free educational content, tools and experiences on-air, online and in the community.

This year’s event sponsors included FivePoint Communities, KTN Enterprises Inc., California Community Foundation, Edison International, Gibson Dunn, U.S. Bank Commercial Banking and Union Bank.

The gala honored the legacy of The Fred Rogers Company, creator of the classic television show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” which revolutionized educational television and taught millions of children self-esteem, creativity, curiosity, appreciation of diversity, and persistence.

Bold and Brave

Valiant Women of Mission Hospital celebrated women and life at the 20th Annual Valiant Women Luncheon on March 11 at the St. Regis Monarch Beach. The nearly $300,000 raised by the event will support women’s services at Mission Hospital and advanced nursing education. A significant amount will support 3-D mammography.

Event sponsors included The Shops at Mission Viejo, Golden State Foods, Kasdan LippSmith Weber Turner LLC, Reconstruction Experts and Seabreeze Management Co.

One of the highlights of the event was a fashion show: Mission Hospital physicians and nurses served as fashion models, showcasing spring designs from retailers at The Shops at Mission Viejo. The retailers included Brighton Collectibles, Chico’s, Francesca’s Collections, Irene’s Story, Lulu Bella and Tommy Bahama. Models’ hair was styled compliments of Toni & Guy, and makeup was provided by MAC.
