The digital still and motion camera maker’s Helium 8K black-and-white camera was used to shoot David Fincher’s movie “Mank,” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 10 categories. That includes best picture, directing, cinematography, actor in a leading role and actress in a supporting role.
The movie, about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, is one in a series of works shot on Red by Fincher. The director was an early adopter of Red, first shooting 2008’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and has subsequently continued using the company’s cameras on his projects.
Elsewhere, Netflix’s “My Octopus Teacher,” about the bond between a South African octopus and filmmaker Craig Foster, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature. The piece, directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, was shot using Red’s Epic Dragon.
Red Digital cameras have also been used for “The Two Popes,” “The Irishman,” “The Last Dance” and “The Queen’s Gambit” among other movies and TV shows.
It’s a far cry from 15 years ago, when critics scoffed at the company as being vaporware when founder Jim Jannard (also the founder of Foothill Ranch-based Oakley) began taking pre-orders for its first camera, the 4K Red One, at the 2006 National Association of Broadcasters trade show.
Red recently relocated its headquarters from Irvine to Foothill Ranch, in a building across the street from Oakley’s headquarters.
